Public Health Services

Administration
The Administration section provides for the management and support of the health department, including budgeting and finance, personnel management, purchasing, and medical and administrative direction of the department.

Medical Services
A broad array of medical services are available at the health department. Most services are open to the public, although in some cases income limits or other eligibility requirements may be applied. Cost of services vary, with some services free or low-cost, and others assessed on a sliding-fee scale based upon family income. Services for both children and adults are available. The health department is a provider for Medipass, Healthy Kids, and Children’s Medical Services. Many private health insurance plans are accepted for billing. Services may also be billed to your VISA card.

In addition to direct medical services, communicable disease control services are provided. These epidemiological services are designed to protect the health of the general public through the detection, control and eradication of disease, particularly those diseases that are required by law to be reported to the health department. Health Education and Outreach Services

Public Health Mobile Center
The new Public Health Mobile Center offers medical, dental and health education services in the community at various locations.  Visit www.stjohnschd.org to get the latest schedule.

Dental Services
The health department provides dental care to children from the age of 5 through 17 who meet income limitations. Back to Top

Nutrition Services
The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program provides nutrition assessment and counseling, breast feeding education and healthy foods for pregnant, breast feeding, and postpartum women, and their children up to age 5. To be eligible, families must have an income below 185% of poverty guidelines or must be receiving Medicaid, Food Stamps or Temporary Cash Assistance (TC). Call (904) 825-5074 for information.

WIC is open on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. See Children’s Services and Adult Services for other nutrition services. Back to Top

Environmental Health
The Environmental Health unit provides many services designed to protect the health of the community through inspecting, monitoring or licensing private or public facilities and activities that could potentially pose a risk to public health. This includes wells, water systems, septic systems, group care facilities, commercial swimming pools, tanning facilities, and a variety of other activities.

Children’s Services
The health department employs three full-time pediatricians and a complement of nurses and medical technicians to care for children.

  • Pediatric primary care is available to the public on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children’s school and sports physicals are conducted for a $30 fee. The health department also conducts annual Well Child Physicals for children enrolled in Medicaid.   • Free immunizations are provided to all children from infancy through the age of 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Parents should bring the child’s complete immunization record to the clinic if they have obtained immunizations through other providers.

Adult Services

  • Adult Immunizations Adults needing tetanus, flu, pneumonia and hepatitis immunizations can obtain them for a fee. Call (904) 825-5055 for information on immunization recommendations and cost.

  • Healthy Start Program The health department participates in the Healthy Start Program to help prepare pregnant women for the arrival of their babies and for successful parenting. Childbirth education classes, smoking cessation education, breast feeding education and other services are available. Call (904) 825-5055, ext. 1060 for information.

  • ABC Clinic (Assuring Best Care) This clinic provides pregnancy testing, prenatal counseling and case management for pregnant women. The ABC clinic can also determine eligibility for pregnancy-related Medicaid. Call (904) 825-5055 for more information.

  • Family Planning Free pregnancy testing is available through the Women’s Clinic. Family planning services are available through enrollment with the Women’s Clinic. The cost of care is based upon a sliding fee scale and other eligibility criteria may apply. Call (904) 825-5055 for information.

  • HIV Services The health department provides free counseling and testing for HIV and AIDS. The department also provides comprehensive primary care for individuals who are HIV positive. Services include case management, nutrition counseling, mental health assessment and counseling, and dental care in addition to primary medical care. A number of options for financial assistance with HIV medical care are available. Call (904) 825-5055 for information on HIV counseling and testing.
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease The health department provides diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted disease (STD). There is a $25 fee for STD testing and treatment.
